Announcing the Kilt Skate Capital 2026

By Andy MacCulloch and Don Cummer

Halifax kilt skaters.

As promised in the previous newsletter – we said we’d deliberate and announce this year’s Kilt Skate Capital. Drum roll….. Halifax !!! And only the second time they’ve organized an event. And they were a close runner-up with last year’s inaugural kilt skate.

Halifax’s Kilt Skate was especially noteworthy because they got so many people out in such cold weather. Apparently, they gritted their teeth and followed their motto: “stop thinking about it and do it!”

What does it take to win? A sense of fun and merriment. A sense of being part of a larger Canada-wide kilt skate community. While the kilt skate originated in Ottawa, events now take place across Canada, in one location in the US and even one in Scotland.

Being the winner comes with bragging rights. Some winners (Winnipeg, for example) even have had announcements in the provincial legislature congratulating the city for being named the Kilt Skate Capital of Canada.

We look forward to next year’s edition of the Great Canadian Kilt Skate 2026.
