Kilt Making Demo and Ceilidh

The Scottish Society of Ottawa was pleased to present an afternoon of information and demonstration of Kilt making from master Kilt maker Shirley Stapley and her assistant Julie Ricard from Marshall Bespoke Kiltmakers followed by a music session with the Mullinger Session Players. The event took place Saturday November 18th 2-6 pm at the Canadian Forces Station Leitrim All Ranks Mess and was attended by over 25 people including several who are studying and practising tartan weaving.

We learned about knife pleats, box pleats and even Kingussie pleating. We practised forming pleats (more difficult that it looks) and the difference between pleating to the sett and pleating to the stripe. The music session followed with some traditional Scottish and Celtic tunesWe ended the session by “kilting-up” our Chair John McLuckie in the full 8 yards. See the video here.
