skating for fun & food
By Dave Johnston
The 2026 edition of the SSO’s Great Canadian Kilt Skate proudly added another community purpose this year. For the first time, we teamed up with the Ottawa Food Bank to collect over two hundred dollars in donations in addition to non-perishable food items.
Held on Saturday February 21st at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa, the event attracted a whole range of participants such as City Councillor Laura Dudas, and Scottish Government Representative in Canada John Devine. Councillor Dudas read a proclamation declaring the day to be Great Canadian Kilt Skate day.
There was music provided by bagpipers, and hot chocolate provided by Boccato Gelato & Crepes. The event was well-attended by close to three dozen skaters including from the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa (Duke of Edinburgh’s Own) and the Ottawa Branch of The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society of Ottawa.
A great time was had by all!
