Origins of the Saltire

By Donald Macdonald

The diagonal cross of the Saltire is thought to date back to Angus Mac Fergus, High King of Alba who, in fighting the Angles and Saxons in 832 AD, had a vision from above the fighting, of a white saltire spread out across the blue of the sky.

A vow to make Andrew Scotland’s patron saint was realized upon victory, with the saltire’s eventual adaptation on the flag we see today.
