Ottawa Highland Dancing Association: Our story, our invitation

By Kayleigh Armstrong

The OHDA continues to promote the knowledge and love of Highland dancing through supporting dancers in the greater Ottawa region, in Ontario and across the country in organized, competitive events and additional events to promote Scottish culture. That means things like workshops, demonstrations and displays as well as individual learning and development opportunities.

The Association organizes Highland dancing competitions each year in the Ottawa area under the sanctioning of the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing (SOBHD) based in Scotland. The OHDA is set to host Canada's Capital City Championship, a Spring Premiership, Choreography events and many open competitions in all categories.

The idea is to stimulate knowledge and appreciation of Canada’s Scottish heritage and in particular, our Highland dance heritage. It ensures this heritage is passed on from generation to generation. The Association is also focused on creating a wider interest in Canada’s cultural diversity through the promotion of Highland dancing and linking with multicultural events and organizations within the greater Ottawa area.

Providing dancers of all ages with the venues and means to learn and experience Highland dancing in a structured environment, is a primary goal. The OHDA is focused on - but not limited to - the greater Ottawa area. Dancers from all across Ontario, Canada, and other countries, are always invited and encouraged to participate in the events and activities organized and sponsored by the Association.
