COMMunications Director

Liz immigrated from Scotland as a teenager with her family to Canada in 1968. Her dad had spent seven years in the early 50s in Canada as an agricultural mechanic and, after starting a family on his return to Scotland, he spoke endlessly of how one day they would move to this land of opportunity.

This came about in May 1968 when the family moved to the Kingston area of Ontario. Strong ties remain with the Scottish family in rural areas near Aberdeen, with frequent return visits over the years. Liz studied Journalism at Carleton University and, as part of her program in her final year, undertook six months on-site research in Scotland on the country’s self-determination and initial vote on devolution in 1979.

Liz has been a communications consultant for many years, including seven years of residing and working in Southern Africa. Her passion for all matters Scottish – politics, culture etc. – is keen, as well as her enjoyment of a good laugh and a wee dram! Liz’s interest in engaging Canadian people in enjoying and learning about both traditional and modern Scotland, and the ties that bind our two countries, is what motivated her to become a member of the Scottish Society of Ottawa’s Board as the Special Events Director

A note on the name “Smith”: So many people tend to dismiss this name as “English.” Not so! This is a trade name from centuries ago, just like “Baker.”  Derived from the Anglo-Saxon smitan, meaning "to smite or strike," Smith and its derivations are an occupational name for those who work with metal (smith or blacksmith), one of the earliest jobs which required specialist skills. It is a craft that was practiced in all countries, making the surname and variations the most common of all surnames. My dad’s name was “Andrew Black Smith.”

Clan Smith was associated with Clan Macpherson and was one Clan Chattan’s allied clans. Although the Gaelic name for Smith is Gow, Gowan, or MacGowan, the anglicized form – “Smith” –has been used in Scotland since the 12th century. Today Smith is the most common name in Scotland.
